SWEET TATER

Upon entering this quaint Mulberry Street boutique, you’ll get an exhilarated rush, kinda like when you came across all of those kick-ass vintage clothes your mom was donating to Goodwill. How dare she! And how dare they, for encouraging you to spend money in this recession—except in this instance, it’s actually worth it. Owners Sarah Gregory and Christina Kornilakis transformed an abandoned laundromat into their NoLita boutique in May 2004, and ever since have continuously stocked the shelves with stunning ready-to-wear pieces, leather handbags and boots. Kornilakis notes, “We source a majority of it here, in the U.S. Sarah’s gone to Italy and bought some amazing stuff. Italy has open [flea] markets, but in Greece, they don’t sell secondhand at all. So it’s more of a battle there; like a hidden treasure.”
Sweet Tater’s ability to seamlessly blend the vintage pieces with their own Mediterranean-inspired designs is what sets this boutique apart from others. The Sweet Tater collection first began with their ever-popular Greek Shirt Dress, and has been altered and reconstructed in every collection. So for spring, they plan to continue doing what they do best—traveling the world for those great 1950s-80s vintage finds, including wooden platforms and wedges, and stocking the shelves with awesome house-collection tunics and shirtdresses in which even our moms would feel nostalgic.
